  • Building Adventures with Friends

St. Andrew's is blessed to host several thriving Scout groups, including Cub Scout packs for boys and girls ages 5–11, and a Scout Troop for youth ages 11–14. But there is another exciting and lesser-known program at our church. Venturing Crew 584, part of Scouting America, offers a dynamic opportunity for older high school, and even college-age youth ages 14–20. Venturing is a co-ed program designed to help young people grow in leadership, character, and service while having a truly great time along the way. It is one of the most flexible and engaging youth programs available today. And as an integral part of the Scouting program, our members live and honor the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Our Venturers participate in a wide variety of activities shaped by their own interests—from outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, and water sports, to meaningful community service projects, leadership development, and learning new life skills. Because the program is youth-led, members don’t just participate—they lead. They plan activities, administer their own program, and develop confidence, teamwork, and communication skills that last a lifetime. Scouting America Venturing Crew 584 in action enjoying outdoor activities and learning leadership skills. Our Crew meets Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Family Life Center-Room 309. Over the past year, our crew has actively served St. Andrew's through activities such as Scout Sunday, The Food Pantry, The Pumpkin Patch and Granny's Attic, as well as other community events throughout Brandon and the greater Tampa Bay area. One of the greatest strengths of Venturing is its welcoming, energetic, and inclusive environment. Young men and women work side by side, build strong friendships, and encourage one another to grow in confidence, purpose, and faith. It’s a place where youth can truly discover their strengths, take on real challenges, and make a lasting difference—while having a lot of fun doing it. Scouting America Venturing Crew 584 offers dynamic opportunities for young people ages 14–20. Venturing Crews are encouraged to design programs that reflect the interests of their members, and our crew does something especially unique. Most of our youth also serve as summer camp staff at nearby Scout camps, gaining tremendous leadership experience for older teens that few other youth programs can match. We welcome new members ages 14–20, and prior Scouting experience is not required. Some of our members had never been in Scouts before joining our crew. If you or your teen is curious about Venturing Crew 584, we'd love to hear from you. Please reach out to Earl Richardson, Scout Leader at Earlr1488@gmail.com with any questions—and come see what Venturing all is about! • A Handmade Hug

What is a prayer shawl you might ask? I think of a prayer shawl as a hug from God offering warmth and comfort. Shawl making begins with a prayer and blessing for the intended recipient and these intentions are carried out throughout the making of the shawl with one final blessing offered before the shawl is sent on its way. Shawls can be used for those unable to leave their homes, for those experiencing medical issues or recovering from surgery, and as a comfort in times of loss or stress. Prayer shawls are also given in celebration...of a marriage, a birthday, a graduation. We have prayer shawls available in the Sanctuary as well as in a basket in the Narthex that can be picked up on Sundays for yourself or for gifting. Gift bags are also available in the Narthex. This year we have also been sharing our prayer shawls with the Campaign Against Human Trafficking, Best Care Senior Living, James A. Haley VA Medical Clinics, and Vitality Respite Center. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry consists of crocheters and knitters of all levels from those with no experience that want to learn to those with years of experience. We are always happy to welcome new members! If you are interested in our group, please join us! If you do not have any experience or have not crocheted or knitted in a while, please do not let that be a deterrent. We are excited to teach you; to help you brush up on a skill you maybe have not used in a while or to learn something new. We meet the first and third Monday of the month from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in Disciples' Hall-Room 420 and every first and third Wednesday evening of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center-Room 302. Hope to see you there! Click here for the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Holly Midboe, Ministry Leader Prayer Shawl Ministry St. Andrew's UMC-Brandon #saumcbrandon #reachcreateserve #PrayerShawlMinistry

  • It's Easy Being Green

As Methodists we are called to be caretakers of God's creation. All of creation is the Lord's and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, soil, air, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God's creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings.  About a year ago, we started a new Creation Care Ministry at St. Andrew's because God has granted us stewardship of creation and we need to meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect.  Twenty-three members signed up to be a part of the “Green Team”. The initial focus for the team was to look at how we might take better care of God’s church and campus grounds.  We saw that a lot of trash and debris was present around the church grounds which were not being cleaned up.  Green Team members volunteered to walk the campus periodically to pick up trash and debris. The team noticed that paper and other recyclable materials were ending up in the church’s waste bin to be thrown away.  The church has no recycling service to collect and recycle paper and other items in the church office, kitchen or St. Andrew's Academy. Blue bins were placed in each of these areas to collect recyclables. Volunteers from the team signed up to periodically empty the bins and take the contents home for recycling.   Another focus for the team is to eliminate the use of plastic and Styrofoam containers. We worked with the kitchen crew to use compostable bowls in place of foam dishes and with the Meals on Wheels ministry to replace foam with paper-based take-out containers. United Women in Faith went further and hosted a meal with bamboo flatware and compostable disposable plates.  We will continue to encourage all our ministries to eliminate the use of plastic and Styrofoam wherever possible. One of the fun things we did this year was to build a children’s garden (pictured below). The Green Team and St. Andrew's Academy staff wanted to give the children an opportunity to see the miracle of planting a tiny seed and watching it grow into a beautiful plant.  In March, the team constructed a raised bed garden in the playground area. . Beginning this Sunday, the Green Team is excited to announce a new effort: collect and recycle plastic bags and wrap we commonly have in our household.  Each Sunday, we will collect the bags and send them to NexTrex, a manufacturer that produces an earth-friendly composite decking and railing from the plastic. White bins for collecting plastic bags are located in the breezeway area on Sunday mornings. Signage on the side of the white bins will show you what type of items we can collect. We are asking everyone to collect and bring their household bags to church on Sundays!   The Creation Care Team encourages you to help us to be good stewards of God’s creation by reusing, replacing, and recycling plastics and paper at home, at church and at work. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact George Miller at georgefmiller@gmail.com . • Doing Justice Matters.

I first heard that St. Andrew’s had a Justice Ministry in August of 2020. I am a bit embarrassed to admit I did not know there was any difference between ministries of mercy and ministries of justice. Before I arrived here at St. Andrew's, I had never participated in a Justice Ministry. I was so intrigued to hear about HOPE (Hillsborough Organization for Progress & Equality). In case you are a bit lost about which ministry I am referring to, here is what the HOPE website says about the ministry of justice. "Since 1988, HOPE has organized faith communities to build power to address root causes of poverty and injustice in Hillsborough County, FL. We are a non-partisan and nonprofit organization. HOPE is a coalition of nearly 30 member congregations representing thousands of Hillsborough County residents." Visit HOPE (Hillsborough Organization for Progress & Equality) to read more about HOPE's impact in the Tampa Bay Area. So let me tell you about my first time participating in this ministry. One night a year, all the churches connected to HOPE (29 as of now) gather in a large church and invite Tampa politicians and elected officials to come hear our requests for justice. The goal is that these leaders see us as a voting population that has something to say about our community. This yearly event is called Nehemiah Action which is traditionally during the spring. This year it is on Monday, April 20, in the evening. That first time Gary and I attended, we drove all the way over to Carollwood (FL) in heavy traffic. Not a great start. When we arrived, I did not think the church hosting the event was organized enough in their parking lot. I really did not have a good attitude, and I did not understand what I was about to participate in. Then the event began. I realized I was surrounded by hundreds of people who also drove a long way and were also not thrilled with the parking. Yet they understood that this evening was not about anyone’s comfort. This event was about joining our voices so our Tampa politicians would hear from Tampa residents about problems, like a lack of affordable housing or a lack of help for people with mental health challenges. That night I heard stories that broke my heart. Yet I also saw the hearts of hundreds of people who felt the same way about these injustices as I did. Crowded into a large sanctuary with people who cared about others just like I did gave me a deep sense of hope. I have not stopped attending since. I hope you will join us on Monday, April 20 for the next Nehemiah Action . The more people who attend, the greater our voice and the greater our hope for change in our city that needs justice for all. Chartered bus transportation is available for a small cost to the Nehemiah Action if you prefer not to drive. Click HERE for more information on transportation to the event. If you would like to learn more about St. Andrew's Justice Ministry and their work with HOPE, visit our Justice Ministry webpage and our Justice Ministry Facebook page. • Be the Light!

St. Andrew's Food Pantry touches about 70 to 80 families in need from the community each Wednesday throughout the year by providing food donated by the congregation.  Much of the work—collecting, packing, and distributing food bags to families from the community — takes place on Monday and Wednesday mornings, but there are other opportunities to serve as well.  We are all indebted to those who assist each week, from buying food with funds donated from the congregation, collecting food donations from local stores, filling bags and serving them, to assisting with set up every Wednesday. Many of you have also contributed through your generous donations of non-perishable and unexpired food items which are always needed and greatly appreciated. We welcome volunteers at the Food Pantry!   Volunteering is easy and no training is required. The Food Pantry takes place right in the church parking lot.  Special groups such as youth or Scouts may earn community service hours by volunteering. You can get more information about volunteering by clicking here or by contacting our leader Carol Menne at Mennebc@gmail.com or myself at EarlR1488@gmai.com .   The Food Pantry at St. Andrew's UMC-Brandon is fulfilling the Gospel by reaching and serving those in need. Pictured: Inside the Food Pantry and volunteers welcoming guests in the church parking lot. Serving with us is so rewarding. I believe the benefits of the Food Pantry are not only for those being served in a time of need, but also very much for us, the volunteers, because it is so deeply fulfilling.  The families who drive to the Pantry often see our volunteers wearing a St. Andrew's “Be the Light” t-shirt with a brightly glowing light bulb with that inscription. It depicts what our church is called to be, light, in an all-too dark world. And as we go about our weekly pantry routines, I've often thought of a scripture passage of Jesus’s teaching in Matthew chapter 25, where He tells us of His eventual return in glory amid our frail and confused lives. We often may wonder wher e God amid all the stress, anxiety and craziness of our world .  Jesus reminds us in Matthew chapter 25 that when He comes again, people will ask Him, "Where were you?" And He will reply, “When I was hungry, you fed me. When I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me… Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.” Volunteering at the Food Pantry is an immensely fulfilling way for us to live out our faith through concrete and tangible service to others.   If you’d like to learn more or have questions, feel free to reach out to us. Or just stop by the church any Monday or Wednesday morning, we’d love to show you what we do! • More Than a Welcome. A Place to Belong.

The dictionary defines hospitality as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. I see hospitality as being friendly to those you know and to those you don’t know. Going that extra step to help someone if they have that “lost” look on their face, or need help to get to the sanctuary, even picking up an item that fell from their arms. When you see a smile coming from them or a laugh because you took the time to talk to them that is my definition of hospitality. Honestly, extending God’s grace is my passion. Several years ago, I was asked by Pastor Jayne to focus my energy on hospitality systems that would help us make sure everyone experienced the love of Jesus when they visited. If this is something you would enjoy, we would love to have you join the hospitality team. It is fun working with great people that you get to know on a more personal and closer level. Hospitality teams work 4 weekends then have 2 months off. Seeing the people coming into the church on Sunday morning being greeted at the parking lot first and then at the front doors and then again at the Sanctuary brings me great joy. Our greeters are also making sure our church looks tidy and welcoming. It goes beyond what words could ever express what I get from volunteering in hospitality especially when I see someone looking for a little bit of extra help or someone in the same position I was in a few years ago as a first-time visitor. Just know, if you join the hospitality team, you can make all the difference on what their next hour is going to be like at St. Andrews. If you are interested in joining the Hospitality Team at St. Andrew's, click HOSPITALITY for more information. • Love in Action is Unstoppable: Cornerstone Family Ministries & The United Women in Faith

Members of St. Andrew’s United Women in Faith spent a great morning on Friday, March 6, visiting Cornerstone Family Ministries in Tampa  to learn more about their work serving children and families throughout the area. Through time spent with staff, classroom visits with the children at the Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center, and a tour of the historic Wolff Center in Ybor City, we experienced firsthand the heart of Cornerstone’s mission. The visit offered a beautiful reminder of the life-changing impact of ministries dedicated to nurturing children and strengthening families. Our morning began over coffee with Cathy Stone, Executive Director of Cornerstone Family Ministries, where we learned about Cornerstone’s history with Rosa Valdez, t he namesake of the Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center. Valdez, in 1892 with her own funds and the help of benefactors, established a small school in her west Tampa neighborhood during the era of segregation serving the plight of immigrant children. Afterward, we attended Friday’s children’s chapel with Cindy Cisco who led the children in song…they were excited and precious with their robust singing and animation. Leaving chapel, we divided up into the classrooms, some going to 2-, 3-, 4-, & 5-year-olds. We played with Play-Doh, read to them, and helped with puzzles, all the while each of the children wanted to hug us; to tell us their names and all about themselves. Some of us got to rock and hold the babies. We all agreed that God, with the teachers and staff are doing amazing things at the Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center. After leaving the Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center, we drove to the Wolff Center, named after Eliza Wolff, in Ybor City. This is the original United Women in Faith settlement from 1892.  Wolff, who wintered in Tampa, pleaded with the Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (today known as United Women in Faith) to form a mission school for the immigrants living in east Tampa. We toured the administrative hub of Cornerstone and learned about their outreach to 150 Daycare Centers in five (5) counties, helping them follow good nutritional meals for their children.  Our group then proceeded to their garden at the back of the property, established for the surrounding community. We had lunch from La Segunda Bakery and a freshly prepared salad from the garden. We toured their Health Hub (close to a remodeling completion) that will teach children and families about healthy food. Using produce from the garden, they will teach healthy choices, prepare a meal with the families, and send them home with produce. Our Call to Prayer and Self-Denial program on Sunday, March 8 included an offering going directly to our National Mission Institutions, of which Cornerstone Family Ministries is one of the original institutions. We were blessed to have had a beautiful day outdoors and enjoyed time with the precious children and staff from Cornerstone Family Ministries, a United Women in Faith and St. Andrew's UMC community partner. • Good Grief: Support for the Grieving

Grief is a strange companion. It arrives uninvited, lingers longer than expected, and can feel like a weight that never ends. Whether your loss is recent or long past, sudden or after a long goodbye, grief rarely follows a neat timeline. That’s why this support group, Good Grief, exists. We meet every Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Disciple's Hall Room 421 with a Zoom option available as needed for those who prefer to join from home. This is a welcoming, open support group for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. There’s no sign-up, no “right way” to participate, and no expectation that you should be over it by now. Each session stands on its own, and you’re welcome to join whenever you feel ready. The support group is led by Gary Uremovich and Viveca Yoshikawa, authors of "Good Grief," a practical, hope-filled guide to wholeness after loss. As a married couple and members of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, they bring both compassion and lived experience to the group. Both have walked through widowhood and draw from six years of facilitating grief support groups, with a steady conviction that grieving done intentionally and in community can lead to healing, connection, and even unexpected growth. As Gary often says, “Grief is painful, but how we grieve matters. Done in community, grief can lead us back to wholeness. That’s what we mean by Good Grief.” Each gathering is interactive and gentle, making space for honest sharing, listening, and mutual support. You are welcome to talk, listen, or simply be present. No pressure. No need to perform. Beyond Sundays, we also stay connected throughout the week with simple points of contact that offer encouragement and fellowship, because support is often needed between meetings, not just during them. Gary and Viveca also host Thursday Night Together at their home in Brandon from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. It’s a relaxed, welcoming dinner with no cost and no agenda, just community. Feel free to bring a friend or family member. For questions, Zoom details, or to RSVP, contact Gary at 813-727-7078. #saumcbrandon #reachcreateserve #GoodGriefSupportGroup #grief #loss #community

  • Prayer: The Heartbeat of Ministry Life

The Prayer Ministry at St. Andrew's is here to serve our church, our community, and the world. This ministry is a structured way for people in a faith community to support each other through focused, intentional prayer for individual needs, church activities, and broader community upliftment. Our Prayer Ministry helps to foster deeper spiritual connection, wholeness, and empowers people to experience God's presence and work in their lives. Prayer Ministry involves intercessory prayer, teaching people to pray, utilizing established prayer groups, and provides a dedicated space by the sanctuary or times for prayer, acting as the "backbone" for other ministries. We do not have a dedicated time to meet as prayer needs for the church are on an as needed basis. The members of the prayer team handle all requests with sacred confidentiality. Join our Prayer Team! Members commit to pray for the concerns of the church on a regular basis on their own time. Prayer concerns will be emailed to you. If you need more information, please contact ministry leaders Kathy Eckdahl at kathy_eckdahl@yahoo.com and Gary Rideout at gary.rideout@saumc.com #saumcbrandon #reachcreateserve #PrayerMinistry

  • Building Power for Justice: Giving Voice, Creating Community, and Choosing Hope

When neighbors gather to share their stories, something powerful happens. Pain is witnessed. Isolation gives way to solidarity. And from that sacred space, justice work begins. The Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality (HOPE) is a coalition of 29 church congregations, including St. Andrews, united by a shared conviction: faith calls us to act. Together, we give voice to the voiceless and build people power for dignity, fairness, and hope—turning concern into meaningful change. We Listen, Discern, and Act HOPE begins with listening. We sit with neighbors, families, seniors, and people with disabilities, honoring lived experience and allowing real stories to guide our work. Through prayerful discernment, HOPE’s leaders, team leaders, and network members vote on the issues we will address together. This year, HOPE adopted youth and education as a priority issue. A committee was formed and chose to focus on special education ,  seeking to better understand the challenges faced by students, families, and educators—and to advocate for systems that truly serve all children. The Housing Crisis: A Moral Issue More than 103,000 families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities in our region spend over one-third of their income on housing, leaving many one emergency away from crisis. And yet, there is hope. After more than a decade of advocacy, the HOPE Affordable Housing Fund has helped make possible 1,100 safe, affordable homes. In the past year alone, 386 new homes opened at Casa Di Francesco, Baytown, Fulham Terrace, and Casa Bel Mar—creating stability, dignity, and opportunity. We give thanks for what faith and persistence have accomplished and continue to hold in prayer our county commissioners, partners, and all those most impacted by the housing crisis. Your Participation Matters Justice work is not spectator work. Your presence, your voice, and your reflection matter. As you engage with HOPE, we invite you to consider what moved you, where you saw hope, and how this work connects to your faith. Investing in What We Value The HOPE Investment Drive sustains and grows this work—developing leaders, engaging congregations, and strengthening people power. Investment is an opportunity, not a requirement. The return is measured in transformed lives, stronger communities, and opportunity made real.   Tuesday, April 21, 2026, 7:00 PM is a significant date for HOPE. The Nehemiah Action event is taking place at the Bible-Based Fellowship Church. This year, we aim to gather 1,500 individuals to hold our leaders accountable and inspire them to take action.  Sherree Ento, Justice Ministry Leader St. Andrew's United Methodist Church   For more information on St. Andrew's Justice Ministry and their work with HOPE, or to join the Justice Ministry, please visit their website at Justice Ministry | St. Andrew's United Methodist Church or their Facebook page here . #saumcbrandon #reachcreateserve #JusticeMinistry #HOPE #communityorganizing
